Feb 2013, TRICHY: More than 700 students from seven schools in Srirangam gathered at the Srirangam Boys Higher Secondary School and performed 'suryanamaskar' to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. School teachers claim that such exercises will help increase the memory power of the students in the run up to the board exams.
The exercise took place due to the efforts of a postal assistant, V Jambunathan of Thiruvanaikoil. He said since he did not have enough manpower to send volunteers to each of the 30-odd schools to impart the exercise, he chose to assemble all the students within the Srirangam school.
Though Jambunathan sent invitations to a large number of schools in Srirangam, several of them backed out because of the impending exams. Only students of classes six to eight were targeted for the 'surya namaskar' on the auspicious 'rathasaptami' day. According to him, more than the health aspects, the inculcation of the age-old value system in the students in the impressionable age was paramount and was the need of the hour.
